On the last day of the festival, 2 Girls, 1 Queen caught the tail end of Robert Randolph and the Family Band on the main stage, then headed over to Lucinda Williams at Sutro.
We ran into District 1 Supervisor Eric Mar in the press tent. Eric took a look at the list of free food and drinks being served in the tent and said: “I’m amazed at how well you media people are being treated.”
That’s right, SF: while you were suffering the heatwave, traffic, noise, and onslaught of out-of-town drunks in your ‘hood, a bunch of whiny media douchebags were enjoying free food and alcohol. Suckas!
After watching Lucinda Williams, we headed back to the Polo Fields to catch MIA. MIA was apparently the last person to find out that the Beastie Boys had been replaced by Tenacious D, and she wasn’t too happy about it.
We’re not sure why she wasn’t informed of this news sooner, but we’re guessing that her people were afraid that she’d say something stupid. Which she did, via her Twitter. Whatevs, we still love MIA and all her crazy!
As expected, her outfit was fierce (sequined red wing shoulderpads!), her backup dancers were fabulous (“I want that guys job! Do you think he gets dental insurance?”), and we love her music. We couldn’t see the stage setup too well from the press tent, but the lights would have looked even better at night. And she did a two-song Beastie Boys medley.
But MIA ended her set ten minutes early and didn’t play an encore, probably because she was still pissed about playing before Tenacious D. We overheard someone say, “Doing a Beastie Boys cover isn’t gonna save your career!” OMG!
After meeting up with Jamie after Band of Horses, we decided to move closer to the stage to watch Tenacious D, and we’re glad we did. Jack Black (real name: Thomas Jacob Black, which Jamie says isn’t a proper name for a nice Jewish boy) was hilarious, and even stripped down to his underwear after the encore.
The impromptu striptease inspired Jamie to tweet: “Would you have done that for us beastie boys?” Prolly not! Read Jamie’s review of Tenacious D on her blog.
